Quick $100 Sign Up Bonus

The Barclays Uber Visa is a rewards card that lets you quickly stack up points-based cash back that you can use as Uber statements or redeem via gift cards. To get you started earning rewards, the card offers a sign up bonus of $100 that you can redeem for gift cards, as a credit against your statement or as Uber credits. And all you have to do to earn this reward is spend $500 on your credit card within the first 90 days you have the card.

That's about $167 per month or just $5.55 per day — the price of a fancy cup of coffee or a quick sandwich during lunch. You can see how easy it would be to earn this reward just by using your card to pay for purchases you'd already make during that time. A couple of big grocery runs or a replacement of the kitchen dishwasher, and you're there.

Rewards Keep Stacking Up

You keep earning rewards as long as you're using the card and have an account in good standing, too. And the rewards structure is tiered, so you can really make your money work when you use this card to pay for certain regular purchases. Here's how the earnings break down.

  • You get 4 percent back via points on any spending you do at restaurants or bars, including takeout and UberEATs. That means four points earned for every dollar you spend.
  • You get 3 percent back via points on airfare, vacation home rentals and hotel bookings.
  • You earn 2 percent back when you use your card to pay for Uber purchases, shop online or pay for video or streaming services.
  • Finally, you get 1 percent back on all other qualifying purchases — same-as-cash transactions, such as withdrawals, don't count.

That's a lot of facts and figures, so we'll break it down with a hypothetical example so you can see just how quickly your rewards value will build.

If you spend $200 a month eating out or getting take out, you'll earn 800 points a month. That's 9,600 points for the year.

You might also plan a vacation in the same year, booking a rental home and airfare. If you spend $4,000 to cover family airfare and the vacation rental, you'll earn 12,000 more points.

Let's say your streaming bills, Uber purchases and online shopping totals up to an average of $500 per month. That's another 1,000 points per month or 12,000 per year.

Finally, you might spend $300 in miscellaneous charges each month that earn you one point per dollar. That's 300 points per month or 3,600 total for the year.

You're up to 37,200 points for doing nothing but choosing to pay for purchases you would already be making with the Barclays Uber Visa. That's a redemption value of $372, and when you add in your $100 sign up bonus, you've got $472 in value!

Redeem points for:

  • Uber services and purchases
  • Credit card statement credits
  • Gift cards

You can redeem seamlessly via an app or call customer service for assistance.

Even More Rewards

But your redeemable points aren't where the story ends. If you spend $5,000 with your card during the year (which would have happened in the scenario above), you get $50 in credit toward online subscription services you pay for with the Barclays Uber Visa. We love this, because you got 2 percent back in points for paying your streaming bills with this card. And now you can earn some credit back on those purchases.

If you pay your monthly cell phone bill with this card, you get up to $600 in mobile phone protection. That means if your phone is lost or damaged, protection kicks in to help you buy a new one. Plus, you get 1 percent rewards points on each bill you pay with the card.

Other Benefits of Being a Barclays Uber Visa Cardholder

Cardholders receive exclusive invitations to events in U.S. cities, so you may be able to enjoy VIP treatment at presell events and other exciting opportunities. And, no matter where you seek adventure or swipe your card, you can trust that your account is being monitored for fraud and you won't be held liable for fraudulent purchases.

Fees and Financial Considerations

We love a good rewards card with no annual fee (who wants to see their rewards value get eaten up with a yearly fee?), and the Barclays Uber Visa comes through. You won't pay an annual fee for all these rewards.

You also won't pay foreign transaction fees. Some banks charge 3 to 5 percent on transactions outside of the United States, and those fees wipe out the benefit you get from your rewards points. But you can swipe with impunity in international locales without paying any extra credit card fees when you use this card.

Overall, this a fabulous rewards card, especially if you eat out a lot or travel frequently and don't favor a single airline or hotel chain. The Barclays Uber Visa lets you earn rewards quickly and easily and redeem them for goods and services you can use across all facets of life.
