A Stellar Sign-Up Bonus That’s All but Guaranteed

We don’t think any travel rewards credit card bonus is impossible to obtain, but the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard sure does make it easy. All you have to do is make a purchase with the card.

That’s right: one purchase, and you get 20,000 bonus miles.

What’s that worth, exactly? It’s good for a standard season round trip airfare from New York to the UK, for one. That’s more than a $1,500 value. You do have to pay fees, taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges, which total about $450, but using your miles cuts the cost of your flight by 3/4!

Plus, you can earn a bonus every year you have this card. You earn 15,000 miles every year after making a qualified purchase, which means the flight savings just keep adding up.

How Else Can You Earn Miles With the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard?

A number of flexible rewards options exist, and we’ve detailed them below.

  • Purchase directly with Virgin Atlantic, and you earn 3 miles per dollar spent.
  • Make other purchases and earn 1.5 miles for every dollar spent.
  • Add an authorized user to your account and earn an automatic 5,000 miles.

How much are you able to stack up in rewards with this card? Let’s look at a hypothetical.

If you’re interested in the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard, you’re probably a pond jumper (meaning you fly over the Atlantic between the U.S. and the U.K. at least once a year). Let’s assume you make two trips during the year totaling $4,000 spent with Virgin Atlantic. That’s 12,000 miles earned.

Plus, you have to eat, drive, play and handle the daily expenses that come with life, right? If you use this card to cover groceries, eating out, fuel and other incidentals, you could easily spend $2,000 a month. That’s $24,000 a year or another 36,000 miles.

That’s 48,000 miles.

Enough for two round-trip fares during standard seasons or one round-trip fair during premium seasons. Or, you can use your miles in conjunction with cash to offset the cost of a flight, particularly if you’re looking to upgrade to first class.

The value of your miles depends on when and how you redeem them, but 48,000 miles could be worth $3,000 or more.

You can also make your miles last even longer if you spend $25,000 or more annually (which the hypothetical situation above does accommodate for). In that situation, you can get a second fare for half the miles when you redeem miles to cover two fares for people traveling together.

You can also redeem mile points for:

  • Chauffeur services
  • Flights and services with partners such as Delta
  • Hotel perks through partners such as Hilton
  • Merchandise and gift cards with partners such as Macy’s

Other Perks of the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard

Those are some valuable mileage reward perks for anyone who regularly flies Virgin Atlantic, but the value certainly doesn’t stop there.

You also get all the perks we commonly associate with a good Mastercard credit card, including security and convenience benefits that keep your data safe and your account accessible to you. Here’s a run down of some of the perks you get with the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard.

  • Chip technology better safeguards your data when you use this card at qualified terminals in more than 130 countries, including the United States.
  • Overdraft protection lets you link this card to other Bank of America accounts as a backup payment method to reduce fees and the chance of an NSF return.
  • Paperless statement options let you go green while maintaining easy access to all your account details, statements and payment options.
  • Online shopping security via ShopSafe lets you generate a temporary, one-time credit card number for each online purchase, so no one can steal your actual credit card number.
  • Account alerts that let you stay on top of payment reminders and balances, even when you’re busy in exotic locales.
  • Online and mobile banking, which makes it easy to manage your money from anywhere in the world.
  • Text banking for on-demand access to critical data about your account.
  • Fraud protection that blocks suspect activity on your account and covers you so you’re not liable for unauthorized charges.
  • Digital wallet technology, which lets you make payments with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay.
  • Free access to your FICO score each month, so you can manage your credit portfolio proactively.

What About the Fees?

This is a card that’s ideal for people who travel regularly between the United States and the UK, so we’re delighted to see that it comes with no foreign transaction fees. That means you won’t pay anything extra when you swipe this card outside of the United States.

Some banks charge 3 to 5 percent on international transactions, so the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard is effectively saving you $3 to $5 on every $100 spent, letting you earn reward miles without added costs.

The card does come with an annual fee of $90, but that’s more than covered with the value you get from redeeming miles. The easy-to-access sign-up bonus pretty much obliterates the annual fee the first year, and your 15,000 bonus miles per year does the same thing in subsequent years.

For people who travel over the Atlantic regularly for business or pleasure, this card is a no-brainer. Plus, since you can use your rewards with partner airlines, you can also travel domestically on occasion too.
