A Simple Sign-Up Bonus With Great Value

The current Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles bonus is 30,000 points if you spend $1,000 with the card the first three months after you open the account. You do have to spend on merchandise and services; same-as-cash transactions such as money orders or wire transfers don’t count. But that’s less than $12 a day, which you’re probably spending on the general necessities of life anyway. Why not earn a little from buying the things you haveto have?

You only need to spend about $83 a week to get the bonus, and if you’re anything like me, all you need to do is swipe the card every time you’re at the grocery checkout stand and you’ve more than got that covered.

The sign-up bonus of 30,000 points covers at least one round-trip ticket in the contiguous United States, including summer-time, round-trip fare from Los Angeles to D.C., which is over a $1,000 value. That’s a stellar return for simply buying things you’d already buy anyway.

Amex sweetens the sign-up deal with a $50 statement credit if you make a Delta purchase in the first three months. All you have to do is call customer service after making a qualifying purchase with the airline to redeem this reward.

Earning More Miles With the Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles Card

Miles don’t stop accruing just because you reach the bonus. In fact, with the Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles card, you can accrue unlimited miles.

  • You get 2 miles per dollar for every dollar you spend directly with Delta — that includes booking flights via Delta.com (but not on Delta flights booked through third-party websites), Delta vacation packages, Sky Club membership or pass payments, in-flight purchases and seat upgrades.
  • You get 1 mile for every other dollar you spend (aside from same-as-cash purchases).

How much can you earn with this card? With no limits and no blackout dates, Delta doesn’t set a ceiling for your rewards, so it’s really up to you. Let’s look at an example.

Say you decide to use this card to cover all your standard purchases, including groceries, fuel, clothing, travel and eating out. Perhaps your normal lifestyle runs you $2,000 per month. That’s $24,000 in a year, which nets you 24,000 miles.

You might also take a summer vacation with your family, with everyone flying Delta. The spend on airfare and airline incidentals might total $4,000, which is another 8,000 miles.

Since you’re spending $2,000 per month, you’re going to more than make the sign-up bonus the first three months, so there’s another 30,000 miles.

You’re up to 62,000 miles within the year — enough to take a round trip from New York to Paris. That’s at least$2,000 in value.

That many points also gets you two or more round trip tickets within the United States. You can also redeem miles for:

  • Merchandise
  • Upgrades
  • Car and hotel deals

Other Perks of the Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles Card

As a SkyMiles member (which you are if you have this card), you get some perks that make traveling more enjoyable.

  • Check bags for free. Your first checked bag is free on each flight, which means you can save up to $25 per flight (or $50 on a round trip).
  • Discounted Sky Club access. Flash your card to get into the Sky Club lounge for complementary Wi-Fi, drinks and snacks at a reduced rate.

What Does the Card Cost You? Fine Print About Fees

Great news for travelers: the card comes with no foreign transaction fees. That means when you swipe in international locations, you won’t pay anything extra. Some banks charge 3 percent or more on foreign purchases.

The Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles card does come with an annual fee, but it’s waived the first year. That means those bonus miles and other rewards you rack up (plus that $50 statement credit) are like money in the bank.

After the first year, you’ll pay $95 a year in annual fees. If you regularly use this card and redeem your miles, though, you’ll make the fee back in rewards three or more times.
