Big Advantages From the Start

Your time as an AmEx Blue Cash Everyday cardholder will kick off with a stellar introductory promotion offer: $150 back after spending $1,000 in the first three months. While many cards have similar returns for far higher expense requirements, American Express makes it easy, requiring just $334 a month or around $84 a week to meet this cash back offer. For most users, this won't be hard at all; spend just $50 on groceries and $34 on gas each week, and you'll be well on your way to putting $150 back into your pocket. There are no exclusions on this promotion, so as long as you hit the spending limit, you qualify.

Cash Back on the Categories That Matter Most

Lots of cards offer significant cash back, but few do it in as many ways as the AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card does. Whether you love department stores or grocery shop on a regular basis, there's always a way to earn cash back with this card.

First, all purchases are always worth at least 1 percent cash back. There are no limitations; if you're using your card, you're earning cash. However, some categories of spending are worth more than others.

Unlike cards that require monitoring rotating categories and remembering which shopping destinations offer more rewards at any given time, the AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card makes bonus cash back a little easier to manage. Grocery stores are always worth 3 percent cash back, up to $6,000 in spending a year. After this point, all grocery-related spending is reduced to 1 percent. In addition, U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores are always worth 2 percent cash back, with no limits on spending annually.

With these factors in mind, there's significant free cash to be had simply by using your card. Say, for example, that you spend $1,400 a month on your credit card, $300 of which is at grocery stores and $150 is at gas stations and department stores. This means that you'll earn 900 points for your grocery spending, 300 for your gas station and department store expenses and 950 for the remainder, for a total of 2,150 a month or 25,800 per year. That's a cash equivalency of $258; when combined with the $150 introductory offer, you can expect a first-year yield of $408!

But what if you spend even more? If you instead pay $2,000 per month, with $500 on groceries and $300 on gas and department stores, you could earn 3,300 points per month or 39,600 a year. With the sign up bonus, that's $546 in cash back in one year alone.

Rewards earned are easily redeemable. Just log into your online account and choose the option to redeem some or all of your points in any denomination desired. Your rewards are then applied to your account as a statement credit.

Extra Bonuses to Sweeten the Pot

The AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card offers some amazing benefits in the form of cash back, but that's not where the fun ends. Cardholders can also take advantage of significant additional advantages, including:

  • Car rental loss and damage insurance
  • The Global Assist Hotline, providing 24/7 access to legal, financial, medical and other emergency services
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Extra warranty coverage on qualifying purchases
  • Purchase protection against damages for up to 90 or 120 days
  • Complimentary ShopRunner membership, valued at $79
  • Access to exclusive member events for American Express cardholders
  • Fraud protection
  • Pay It Plan It coverage so you can decide how to pay your bill, including splitting large purchases

Affordable Fee-Free Spending

Lots of cards with big rewards come with equally big fees. However, the AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card is an exception. There is no annual fee associated with this card, saving you around $95 a year over comparable cards on the market.

In addition to the absence of annual fees, you can also save on interest. Both balance transfer and standard APR are 0 percent for the first 15 months, providing a way for you to save on interest for over a year. For those with large balances to move, this can be a big benefit, giving you time to pay off a lingering balance without worrying about interest. There is a modest fee on balance transfers — the greater of $5 or 3 percent — but for large balances, 15 months without interest can be well worth it. If you transfer $1,000, for example, you'll end up paying $30 in fees, but this is much preferable to the $147 to $257 that would accrue in interest in a year's time. After the promotional period, APR varies from 14.74 to 25.74 percent, depending on credit history and score.

Regular travelers may want to choose another card when heading across the border; the AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card does come with foreign transaction fees at 2.7 percent of the U.S. dollar value of all transactions. This means that every $100 you spend out of the country, you'll also pay $2.70 in fees.

The Bottom Line

If you want a great way to save money while spending in all of your favorite categories, few cards compare to the Blue Cash Everyday card from American Express. With a great $150 signup bonus, no annual fee and 0 percent APR for the first 15 months, the opportunity to score $180 in cash back annually from grocery shopping alone, and guaranteed rewards of at least 1 percent on all other purchases, you'll love the ample cash back this card yields. When combined with other offers like a free ShopRunner membership valued at $79 a year and travel and rental car insurance, you'll never reach for another card again.
