Capital One Venture Rewards vs. Capital One VentureOne Rewards?

Capital One has one of the best varieties of credit card offerings out there. You can get dining cards, business cards, and balance transfer cards all with some impressive perks as well. One of the best categories of credit cards Capital One offers is travel and miles cards. There are two of these types of cards, in fact, and at first glance, it’s kinda hard to tell them apart. Even the name is confusing if you don’t look extra carefully!

I’m talking about the Capital One Venture Rewards card and the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card. There, did you miss the subtle difference between the two cards? Did you do a double take? Me too! And the benefits distinctions are almost as imperceptible as the name variation. But there are important differences, and if you want to really make the most out of your credit card spending, you’ve got to know where each one shines. So, read through this quick comparison to make sure you’re whipping out the right plastic for the right purchase every time.

Capital One Travel Cards

Both the Capital One Venture Rewards card and the VentureOne card offer some fab features like no transfer fees for balance transfers, no foreign transaction fees for overseas purchases and transactions, and absolutely no blackout dates or restrictions. These are some of my favorites because nothing sucks worse than getting excited to finally plan your well-deserved vacation on miles you’ve worked so hard to earn, only to find out the dates you want aren’t available through points.

Both Capital One Venture cards also have the kind of travel and shopping perks you like to see like auto rental collision coverage and extended warranty, along with some benefits you don’t get with a lot of other cards like complimentary upgrades and concierge services.

Finally, points are easy to redeem using Capital One’s Purchase Eraser, to book travel arrangements, or as gift cards, checks, or account credit. By the way, Capital One’s partnership means you have access to some of the hottest hotels around including:

  • Hilton
  • Marriott
  • Hyatt
  • Sheraton

But, you probably didn't come here to read about how amazing Capital One travel cards are (or did you?), so let's dive into the differences between these two top picks for travel rewards in 2018.

Capital One Venture Rewards Card

What I Love:

  • 2x miles per dollar on every purchase, unlimited
  • 50,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000
  • $95 annual fee, first year waived
  • Travel credit worth $100 for Global Entry or TSA Precheck enrollment

What I Could Live Without:

  • The annual fee

The Capital One Venture Rewards card is one of my favorite travel rewards cards for a lot of reasons. For one thing, you get a big fat signup bonus of 50,000 miles when you spend just $3,000 in the first 3 months. That's a boatload of miles and amounts to around $500! What's more, the Capital One Venture Rewards card has a supremely good rewards program. To begin with, it’s a flat earn rate, and you know I love me some flat rate (no messing about with complicated categories thank you very much!) You’ll earn 2 miles per every dollar you spend with your Capital One Venture Rewards card. Miles are unlimited, never expire for the life of your card, and are easy to redeem.

As if this card couldn’t get any better, Capital One offers a dizzying upgrade for your bonus points. When you book hotel reservations with its partner, you’ll earn an insane 10x miles per dollar spent! That’s out of this world. Now you see why I love this card?

The Capital One Venture Rewards card also comes with smaller (but still amazing) travel perks like a $100 travel credit for Global Entry or TSA Precheck enrollment fees. But I think that the best part of this card is that it only costs $95 per year. You are getting some tremendous benefits that are comparable to some of the premium travel cards out there, but you’re paying less than $100 a year. And the Capital One Venture Rewards card even waives that fee for the first year. That’s what I call real value for your money.

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Card

What I Love:

  • 1.25x miles per dollar on each purchase unlimited
  • 20,000 bonus miles when you spend $1,000
  • 0% APR for 12 months on all new purchases
  • Lower regular variable APR after that
  • No annual fee

What I Could Live Without:

  • Lower miles earn rate

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards card is basically the lite version of the previous card we mentioned. When you want the perks but don’t want the annual fee, that’s when a card like the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card really outshines its counterpart. In exchange for no annual fee, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card offers you a lower miles earn rate. Instead of 2x miles per dollar, this version gives you 1.25 miles per dollar. It's still unlimited, and it's still applicable to any purchase regardless of category, so it’s still a fabulous rewards program by most standards.

Something that the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card offers cardholders that the previous version does not is an introductory APR offer. If you love the idea of paying out a large purchase slowly over time without the added expense and headache of interest payments, then an interest-free promotion is right up your alley. The Capital One VentureOne Rewards card gives you 12 months interest-free for all new purchases you make with your new card.

And don't forget, you also get a chunky signup bonus of 20,000 when you spend just $1,000 in the first three months with this credit card. That's lower than the Venture Rewards card, but so is the spend requirement, so it's a fair trade-off. In fact, if you aren't a big spender, then the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card welcome bonus might be more attractive to you in the first place.

Variety is the Spice of Life

But, wait a minute! Why simply settle for one when you can have your cake and eat it too? Here’s a way for you to maximize your bonus points earnings and get a nice 0% APR offer at the same time:

  • Sign up for the Capital One Venture Rewards card
  • This will give you the gigantic signup bonus and access to the 2x miles per dollar rewards program for an entire year
  • Once the first year is up, decide if the extra .75x miles per dollar is worth your $95 annual fee. You’d need to spend around $12,500 a year to make it worthwhile.
  • If you do, then go for the gold, and get more points and higher perks.
  • If not, sign up for the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get the signup bonus, but there’s no guarantee that you won’t either! Roll the dice, and you might walk away with two attractive signup bonuses from this top quality credit card issuer.

Whether you choose the Capital One Venture Rewards card or the VentureOne card, you’re getting a fabulous deal on travel spending and earnings. So, make your money work for you with these smart rewards cards from Capital One.
